is short-sighted and a threat to public safety. >> reporter: this violent crime enforcement team died this weekend. it was 17 years old. cause of death? budget cuts. >> we have to organize the police department to work with the fact that we're losing 90 officers. >> reporter: or was it dumb? >> the unit for the san jose police department will have a terrible impact on public safety. >> the san jose police will still fight the gang activity, but the force is now disbanded. they took out an ad today in the mercury news to bring the unit back. >> the majority of homicides in san jose are gang-related. we simply don't have the resources to address gangs today like we did yesterday. >> the police unit counts a thousand gang-related arrests in a city that says they have 50 active gangs and many

members. >> when you're doing your budget, okay? you have to choose what is more important to you. community-based organizations or public safety. >> there are people who believe we should close the libraries in order to avoid cuts in the police and fire departments. i don't share it. >> the mayor says it is a tough balance, the out going chief of police backs the moves. >> we took what is dedicated to gang unit, to stopping the gangs and moving them over to another unit where they will continue to do that along with other things. >> san jose will be a safe city in america he says. the council member is still very worried. >> a lot of crimes wouldn't be solved. and that is a sad day in the city of san jose. >> of course everybody has their own ideas where to cut when there is not enough money to go around. the cops mentioned a $6 million program for the san pedro

square downtown they thought was a waste of money. the mayor says if pensions were not so high, there would be more money. >> just a lot of pointing fingers, thank you very much. and police in the south bay were on the front lines, campaigning for a democrat. they talked about the budget crisis and the impact on public safety. and a city leader in the east side found herself the victim of a crime. ms. quan had her purse taken close to where she was shopping. she was able to get a photo. she is running for mayor and doesn't think she was targeted. another woman in the parking lot said the man approached her as well. a drive-by shooting outside an oakland restaurant last night left four people wounded. police say somebody opened fire on a crowd outside the restaurant on jack london

square. two men and women were hurt but none of the injuries are serious. no arrests are made yet. and we could find out where potentionally dangerous pg&e lines are located in the bay area. the chief of staff says they will release the information tomorrow afternoon. the california public utilities commission requested the information following the pipeline disaster in san bruno. the section of pipe that exploded is now being investigated to try to learn the cause of the san bruno explosion. and pacifica had a benefit dinner there at the school. besides selling tickets they organized trips and gifts for silent auctions. >> well, we could have a fundraiser, maybe turn it into a few thousand. i think she did a good job with

others were injured. the school cancelled homecoming events and scheduled it for later in the year. police did not release the names of the people involved. and cal state east bay says it will admit an additional 254 students for the spring quarters. they granted more than 100 million in federal stimulus funds to help with the grant. they will accept more students at a time when some campuses have frozen admissions. and electric car maker taking ownership of a plant on the first. they hired 34 new employees and intends to hire more. the company has 800 workers worldwide and hopes to have a thousand by year's end. okay, big crowds out there in san francisco this week. oracle's annual open world 2010 conference is under way.

cocaine. . nearly half a million people of peru are without power tonight because of a protest over cocaine. hundreds of the growers in peru have taken crow control of the electric plant in the city. they are protesting the government's destruction of the crops, which is the basis of making cocaine. the protesters have cut power to 40,000 homes and blocked a major highway. the protests are going on for more than a week. and an american hiker

jailed in iran for more than a year is spending the first week back in the u.s. she says it is bitter sweet because her two friends are back there in jail. on how the release it going. >> reporter: sarah shourd hugged her mother, grateful to be back in the u.s. but the american, released after 13 months in iran, says this is no time to celebrate. >> my disappointment in not sharing this with shane and josh is crushing. i stand before you only a third free. >> reporter: when she left last week, she left behind her fiancee, shane bauer and fattal. the two were arrested in 2009, charged with spying. >> it is time to clear up the misunderstanding that led to going to prison. >> reporter: she used the news conference to explain she and shane bauer had jobs in sir, and went hiking with fattal.

assembly. he met today with the council. they are expected to discuss the proposals. he said his government doesn't want the atomic bomb, but does want the u.s. to accept iran as a major power. after five months and more than 200 million gallons of oil, bp's runaway gulf is dead. they say it is permanent. the well poses no further threat, they say. president obama issued a statement calling today's step an important milestone. he said we remain committed to doing everything possible to make sure the gulf coast recovers fulling from fully from the disaster. and looking at the tough arizona law on the borders, today there is a meetings on the conference for security. it was moved because of a threatened boycott if the event were held in arizona. the state police say the

and the 60s. meanwhile though, yeah, not bad around the bay area this evening. there are showers throughout the day, 12-1600th, and scattered showers, things are calmer, temperatures now 61, in san jose, 64, and a cool 57 in pacifica. and if you are traveling things are settling down. pushing on by, the high pressure coming in. so yeah, you know tomorrow we'll start with a lot of cloud cover, partly clear, going towards the coastline. otherwise, sunshine coming our way. remembering that, starting out tomorrow morning, 7:00, lots of low cloud cover in the bay area because of the moisture, be careful out towards the coastal areas. but by the middle of the day it looks good in the bay area. in the valley, cooler towards the coastline.

not bad. let's plan on 63 degrees, half moon bay, about 63. paloalto, 72 and sunny. 74 in santa clara. and places like antioch, berkeley, 60s, warming up tomorrow afternoon. the temperatures popping a good 10 degrees from today, high. plan on 60s, 70s in most spot areas. could see 80s, as we see the end of summer temperatures are cooler after tomorrow. wednesday, the seabreeze, first full day of fall on thursday. the numbers warm up. as we head to next weekend, tell you what. 90s coming to the bay area. if that happens, warmer temperatures along the coastline. by the way, don't forget your hawaii forecast.

two weeks ago at a scotts valley home. they say he bought a retired police car off the internet and out fitted it with police lights and a siren, as well as a loud speaker system. they found other police items, a fake firearm included among them. the real police say if you have come in contact with kelly while he was impersonating an officer, give them a call. and members of a break-away cult were found safe today praying in a public park. more on what triggered the family fears and a desperate overnight search. >> reporter: the quick search for missing members of a fringe religious group ended at a park in los angeles county. >> they were found right here in the park, sitting on blankets. they were together with kids outside playing. >> reporter: they questioned the group's leader, chicas,

they say after talking to her, they hospitalized her. they spent the week combing the area for her and others after family members found letters saying they were preparing for a certain event. >> they left behind notes saying they were going to meet their relatives or jesus, notes that indicated they wanted to go to a different life. >> reporter: chicas broke away from a religious group a while back and worked together with a small group of immigrants. according to one source, they planned to go to a wilderness area, to wait for an earthquake earlier this year. when relatives got wind of the trip, they called it off. this time around, the husbands in the group said the wives were probably brain-washed by the leader. others say it was a
